The Scottish Government has opened a challenge to scientists and businesses around the world with the newly created Saltire Prize that offers £10 million for the winning team of developers of wave and tidal energy technology.
The Saltire Prize - name inspired by the heraldic symbol of the Scottish flag – was announced in April 2008 by the Scottish Government and offers £10 million to projects with commercially viable wave or tidal energy technology that will generate a minimum of 100GWh of power over a continuous period of two years in Scottish waters. The cost, environmental sustainability and safety of projects will be taken into account. Details of the Saltire Prize challenge were announced by Scotland’s First Minister in December 2008.
The challenge is open to teams from any country in the world.
With this prize, Scotland aims to accelerate the commercial development of the marine renewable energy industry. Scotland already possesses strong expertise in this field and offers all the natural resources necessary to support wave and tidal technology and the Saltire Prize is an important step in entering a new era of clean, green renewable energy.
